A playful and colorful wall-mounted coat rack designed by Le Corbusier.
Originally created for the Cabanon, a summer-house on the Cote d'Azur that he designed in 1951 as a birthday present for Yvonne, his wife. This re-issue by Cassina is based on the 1957 version, which had been made for the Unités de Camping, which was next to the Cabanon. In line with the bright colors used for these minimal spaces, keyed on the compact comfort offered by a cruise-ship cabin, the coat-rack too, was multi-hued.
In 1948, Le Corbusier, a regular at the villa E-1027 designed and built by Eileen Gray and Jean Badovici between 1926 and 1929, became friends with the Rebutato family who had just opened a modest restaurant called L'Étoile de mer on the site, facing the bay of Monaco. Le Corbusier returned every year to stay at L'Étoile de mer and in 1951 decided to build himself a cabin. In exchange for the land given by Thomas Rebutato, he offered to create holiday accommodations. His research into holiday homes culminated in the creation of the 1956 Camping Units.
In exchange for a plot of land for the Cabanon, Le Corbusier would design five Camping Units. The Corsican carpenter Charles Barberis oversaw the construction, incorporating certain elements from the interior design of the Cabanon. These units illustrate Le Corbusier's research on minimal housing and modular, economical leisure accommodations adapted to seaside tourism.
The base is made of solid oak, as well are the mushroom-shaped hooks, and are placed at varying heights, based on the criteria established in the Modulor.
